I am reluctant to use this word but, is this adorable or what!!!

You may remember the “Betsy Bell” character that Pete Hawley created for the Bell Telephone system.

Or, if this doesn’t ring a bell, how about those cute valentines that in the mid-sixties you did, or did not, receive from the little red headed girl during the Valentine's party at grammar school.

Sometimes I like to sketch with a ball-point pen.

    With a pen I am able to keep an uninterrupted flow
of the line. I never have, as of yet, had to stop a 
drawing to re-sharpen a pen. :)

Robert McGinnis

Robert McGinnis was an America illustrator who created over 1200 paperback book covers as well as over 40 movie posters in his career.

 There was a time in the 1960s, in American illustration, where the artwork became subordinate to the over-all composition, an obvious influence of the prevailing minimal asthetics.

 In the above artwork the flat minimalist execution of Audrey’s dress relegate it to a symbolic hour-glass shape. Likewise, the cigarette holder is utilized as a line element to direct your eye to the couple on the right.

 You are then directed to the toe which works as a literal black arrow to indicate the white typography before shooting your eye back up to the iconic hour-glass shape and around again…

 Both of these minimalist compositions have a balancing act between organic and inorganic elements (typography, line, shape, color…) in which all, including the illustration, are an integral part of the composition.

18" clay to be cast in bronze

Today’s drawing is similar to a sculpture which I recently finished.
This is the original oil based clay 18” sculpture with a metal armature inside for stability.The next step would be to make a rubber mold in which various materials could be poured to cast copies. Explaining the method of having this piece cast in bronze however is a bit more complicated and lengthy than this one fingered typist is willing to attempt for this blog.

In a previous posting we took a look at a preparatory sketch for a mural project by the “Dean” of American illustration, Dean Cornwell (above right).

The other sketch (above left) is for another mural project by the artist Frank Brangwyn.

Cornwell took a three year sojourn to England to apprentice himself to Frank so he could learn to paint murals.

Notice the similarities in the line quality and the utilization of the background paper as the halftone and the use of white chalk for  highlights.

Below you can see a selection of mural projects from both artists. Again, we can see the influence  Brangwyn had on Cornwell.

Maybe Dean Cornwell should be the “assistant” Dean of Illustration :)
