Thumbnails

Unlike the doodle which is a semi-conscious activity to keep the brain active during boring committee meetings or a phone call that will never end, the thumbnail is a deliberate activity.
The thumbnail is a 1-3” rough sketch used as a visual notation device for new ideas, or figuring out compositions for a preconceived idea.
Above, I have used the thumbnails to work out the silhouetted contours of particular gestures for sculpture ideas.
In the order of production we have the doodle, the thumbnail, the sketch and then the drawing. Below we can see one of the thumbnails elaborated into a sketch and a sculpture which had its genesis in an above thumbnail.
