The artist's correct name is J[ospeh] Henry Bracker, 1890-1957. He was my father. His older brother, M[urray] Leone Bracker, was an artist also, and so my father shortened his signature so as not to compete. My cousin was Charles Bracker, an artist who created Chessie the Cat, the icon of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad advertising; he wrote a children's book about Chessie, with the name of Chessie The Cat. I am an amateur artist who lives in San Francisco. My father and his brother lived in NYC but Daddy moved his family to Shreveport and then to Houston. He illustrated some novels by Edna Ferber and Rex Stout and some stories by Bret Harte.
Thank you "Anonymous" for the update on your father and uncle's names. I found this post trying to get more information on your uncle. I had heard his name was either Maurice of Michael, but it looks like that was all wrong. If you have any more information to share on them, I'd love to hear it. I admire their work very much.
My name is Michael [I’m a female actually] and I’m the great grandaughter of “Murray.” The “M” is for Michael not Murray. My maiden name was Michael Bracker Greenfield because I was named after him. My grandmother, Mildred, was one of Michael's 2 daughters and was with him when he drowned on Rye Beach, NH.
I”m so happy you enjoy his work and it’s fun to see pictures you have gathered of his work. I’m in the process of putting a master database together of all of his work I can find. I’ve never heard of Joseph but I will look into it. Feel free to email me at mgreenfieldwk@yahoo.com
