Exhibiting beautiful draftsmanship, this academic drawing was
made by Joe Waano Gano, one of America's first Indian artists to train
in the Western art tradition. Born a Cherokee Indian (his name means
"Bow-Arrow"), Waano Gano studied with Christian von Schneideau in the
1920s before exhibiting widely in the 1930s and 1940s. The artist won a
series of medals and prizes, painted murals in the Los Angeles General
Hospital, and promoted the native art of the American Indian. This
drawing is initialed and has the artist's estate stamp.
