It is important for an artist to study from nature.
It is also important
to study the works of the masters to see how they reorganized or simplified nature’s
complexities in their work to make it visually palatable to the human eye. As a sculptor I find it useful to draw from the sculptures of
antiquity to see how a particular master has emphasized particular shapes
created by forms within the body to produce a unified whole.
