You probably have never heard of William Lee Hankey, but he was a pioneer in the field of illustrated books at the turn of the century. Hankey was one of the first illustrators to paint to suit the newly invented four color offset printing process. He would paint loose and wet, and would press fabrics into the washes to create textures. This book, "The Deserted Village" was one of the first big successes using these techniques................ from:  animationresources.

Preparatory Drawing

Garret thinks he will try his hand at oil painting. This is my preparatory drawing where I have figured out the arrangement of my darks and lights (values) of the subject drawn on a prepared masonite panel. Also you can see my reference materials here as well.

In the background you can see an oil clay sculpture of the same subject matter I did years ago with a light source upon it. I will use this to further help me study the light effects on this figure for the painting.

PS. oil painting turned out badly

More Fell

click on pics for sharper image

The following is a small rough  ceramic clay sketch (6.5x3.5x2.5 inches) of Jesse W Fell which will help me  clarify the major forms and a possible base that will work with the other sculptural elements of the bust.

The next step will be to create a half- size maquette clay bust, before I start on the final project.

More Skulls

I thought that I should study the skull some more if I am going to do some portrait sculpture. The above drawings are charcoal on smooth 18”x 24” newsprint.

Sculpture students in the French academies in the 18th century were required to be able to model a skull from memory.

I however used reference material for help in sculpting the ceramic head study below.
